as it happens, there was an oops waiting on-screen for me when i went
home for lunch. i had to copy it down onto a bit of paper so i think
i got a couple of numbers wrong(!), but the gist of it seems to indicate
that it is the same fault.

my errors also appear to be related to nfs mounting using automount.
