ok, here is one more data point: looks like it's a kernel problem
as 2.2.5 seems to be rock solid for me while 2.2.10 crashed prety fast:
I tried to do lots of heavy kernel compiles using two separate kernel source trees (2.2.10)
with the following command line on two VCs
n=1 ; while true; do make clean ; sync ; ( time make -j10 modules bzImage ;uptime ) 2>&1 | tee L.$n ; gzip -f L.$n ; sync ; sleep $[ $RANDOM % 30 ] ; n=$[ $n + 1 ] ; done
which gives a load average of ~8-10 with almost no swap space utilisation.
I planned to do this `burn in test' with 2.2.10 kernel, but it locked up _solid_
(no VC switching and no Alt+SysReq anymore!) so I booted 2.2.5 and run
this the whole night (~2*28 kernel compiles) with no single error).
now, how to test/trace such a full kernel lockup ?!
