I will not be of much help but i felt it worth saying.
Both 2.2.11 and 12 lockup here, booting no problem startx no problem
using x no problem, closeing x no problem, once back into console
mode, the machine is unuseable, its just locked, reset is the only
way out. Both kernel versions have the same .config. (Available on
request).

hda: ST34321A, ATA DISK drive
hdb: ST38420A, ATA DISK drive
hdc: CD-ROM 40X/AKU, ATAPI CDROM drive
ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 14
ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15
hda: ST34321A, 4103MB w/128kB Cache, CHS=523/255/63, UDMA
hdb: ST38420A, 8223MB w/512kB Cache, CHS=1048/255/63, UDMA
pentium 2 333mhz 64m 40 meg swap.

2 ethernet cards one smc_ultra one 3c59xx.
