2.2.12, 2.2.10 lockups... VFAT? SCSI? Sound?

Lately I'm having a problem I've never had with Linux... complete
freeze-up which requires usage of the reset/power switch. This has
happened twice while burning CD-R's (GRR) and seems to occur when I am
burning a CD (but not always) and while using /dev/dsp (such as via
shorten, a wav decompressor algorithm, piping to bwavplay). This has
been with 2.2.12 and it just happened with 2.2.10 (I though downgrading
might help). I've also downloading files (ftp) over a cable modem while
this has occurred.

At the same time, I've been lately getting zillions of messages in
/var/log/messages that look like:

I can't make sense of this (not a kernel developer). It looks as if
I could have a corrupted filesystem, but I also realize some changes
occurred recently with VFAT that might have broken something. I tried
dejanews & Kernel Traffic, and grepping linux-kernel and didn't get very
far. I don't know if the file_cluster stuff and the cd / dsp stuff are
related, perhaps they are not. Once the machine hung while I was not
burning a CD.

On another probalby unrelated note, when I modprobe ide-scsi, the
following goes to my syslog:

I have 1 CD-ROM (TEAC) and 1 CD-R (HP). This has been occurring for a
while now, since 2.2 I think.
