I noticed these messages coming forth from my system running
Linux emu.os2.ami.com.au 2.2.10 #2 Wed Jun 16 18:20:49 WST 1999 i586
unknown

The drive concerned is new, I bought it about two weeks ago. Here's what
hdarm says about it:
[root@emu /root]# hdparm -i /dev/hda

/dev/hda:

Model=ST38421A, FwRev=8.01, SerialNo=5BD070J3
Config={ HardSect NotMFM HdSw>15uSec Fixed DTR>10Mbs RotSpdTol>.5% }
RawCHS=16368/16/63, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=4
BuffType=0(?), BuffSize=256kB, MaxMultSect=16, MultSect=off
DblWordIO=no, maxPIO=2(fast), DMA=yes, maxDMA=2(fast)
CurCHS=8184/32/63, CurSects=16498944, LBA=yes, LBAsects=16498944
tDMA={min:120,rec:120}, DMA modes: mword0 mword1 mword2
IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:240,w/IORDY:120}, PIO modes: mode3 mode4

I have lots of the messages; here are a few:
Sep 27 13:55:22 emu kernel: hda: no DRQ after issuing WRITE
Sep 27 13:55:48 emu kernel: hda: no DRQ after issuing WRITE
Sep 27 13:55:50 emu kernel: hda: no DRQ after issuing WRITE
Sep 27 13:55:56 emu kernel: hda: no DRQ after issuing WRITE
Sep 27 13:55:58 emu kernel: hda: no DRQ after issuing WRITE

Questions:
1 Is my drive broken? If so, how do I explain it to the dealer from whom I
bought it?
2 If it's not brokwn, what should I do to avoid these messages and
optimise its performance?

The drive's installed in a system with an ASUS SP97-V motherboard, P133
(with F00F), 96 Mbytes RAM. The chipset's SiS5598; I'm not using the
onboard video.

perhaps this is useful:
[root@emu /root]# lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems 5597 [SiS5582] (rev 02)
00:01.0 ISA bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems 85C503 (rev 01)
00:01.1 IDE interface: Silicon Integrated Systems 5513 (rev d0)
00:09.0 Ethernet controller: Standard Microsystems 9432 TX (rev 06)
00:0a.0 Ethernet controller: Digital Equipment Corporation DECchip 21041
[Tulip Pass 3] (rev 11)

00:13.0 VGA compatible controller: Silicon Integrated Systems 5597/5598
VGA (rev 65)
[root@emu /root]#

The system has another 8.4 Gb drive, it works well.
