There are very very few brown paper bag issues that require breaking source
compatibility. Doing that in 2.2.x is fairly high up the "avoid" case list.
Binary compatibility is another matter.

Ted's stuff is a good basis. Although he goes after solving more than just
"ship for any 2.2. kernel".
