[2.3.23-pre4] No boot on PPro

I have a PPro-150, w/ 64 Mb RAM, and an IDE hard disk.
gcc is (I think) "2.95.2 19990906".

This machine will not even BOOT 2.3.23-pre4.
It says "Loading Linux", but no periods follow.

(This is a different machine than the one I just reported the OOPS for.)
2.3.23-pre1 boots OK on this machine.
