I also saw this. But running a recompile of the kernel, the system
slowed to a crawl, and eventually I stopped the compile after it had
been working on 'setup.c' for about five minutes, and reverted to
2.3.18.

Also, there are a few missing symbols:
__get_pages
console_loglevel (both these for fat.o, nfs.o)
__io_virt_debug (for serial.o)
