[2.3.23] No boot, but boot goes further

This time, after it says "Uncompressing Linux", or whatever, it prints
the periods. However after that, it starts _beeping_, using the
built-in speaker.

gcc version 2.95.2 19990906 (prerelease)
GNU ld version 2.9.5 (with BFD 2.9.5.0.16)
64MB RAM, PPro 150, IDE only
