In your .config for 2.3.23 you have selected P5 architecture instead of
P6. Doesn't your laptop have a P6 processor?

I.e. shouldn't it have CONFIG_M686 instead of CONFIG_M586. I haven't seen
SMP kernels running with CONFIG_M586.
