I build 2.3.23, and it also lock when booting, right
after the messge "ok, booting the kernel..".

but with 2.3.22, it boots OK. but locks/hangs when
shutting down

$shutdown -h now

So, I am using 2.3.22 now, I figured it is better to hang
when shutting down than when booting up ;)
