Try booting with init=/bin/sh, or if that doesn't work, init=/sbin/sash, or
init=/bin/sash . 'sash' stands for 'stand alone shell', and is often
available statically linked.
Otherwise, try a 'rescue' floppy from your distribution, and boot with
'root=/dev/hda1' (or whatever your root is), and fix /etc/ld.so.preload.
