actually, what I am stating is correct, and yes there is 2.6.15-r_ in portage for vanilla-sources:

monster hedpe # emerge -pv vanilla-sources

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild R ] sys-kernel/vanilla-sources-2.6.15.1 -build -doc -symlink 0 kB

Total size of downloads: 0 kB

That is using ~x86 keyword.
