| Whatever is causing the load does it in 'spikes'. Using xload, I saw that,
| the cycle repeats about every minute or so. The load spikes up to about

| if that was causing it), no network activity, nothing that could possibly be

Update on the above. I did some more testing and found that the problem is
probably related to 'init'.
If, at bootup, I have go into runlevel 4 (XWin w/ xdm), the system load is as
described above. However, under runlevel 5, if I run 'xdm' separately the
problem goes away. So it would seem that the problem is with init.
The 'inittab' that came with Slackware 3.0 has this comment:
--- # Runlevel 4 used to be for an X-window only system, until we discovered # that it throws init into a loop that keeps your load avg at least 1 all # the time. Thus, there is now one getty opened on tty4. Of course, this doesn't explain the fact the problem only shows up with kernels 1.3.82 and above, unless something has changed in those kernels related to this?
Would upgrading my init 'fix' this? I've heard of other problems with the newest init?
