PLIP keeps getting worse

Dear Linux Kernel hackers,
just to remind you that PLIP/parport is only getting worse in 2.1.x;
it had long been broken, but now, it hard reboots the machine!

So my question is, has anyone got PLIP to work on recent 2.1 kernels?
Is anyone maintaining PLIP code? Is anyone intending to optimize PLIP?
To add bidirectional parallel support to it? To add ECP/EPP support?
It seems to me that with ECP/EPP, we could get the performance
of 1Mbps ethernet with much less CPU hogging than for the 400kbps obtained
with plain PLIP -- *very* useful on laptops, considering the price and
problems of PCMCIA devices.

If I wanted to do it myself, what documentation should I read about
the specification of parport hardware, those of the linux kernel software?
What are caveats regarding the linux kernel management of ioports and irqs?
What about the need to modify ifconfig to adapt to the type of PLIP cable?

Faré -- PLIP user since 0.99.14, staying 2.0.x because 2.1 breaks PLIP.

PS: another broken package is UMSDOS. Is anyone maintaining it?
