Doesn't happen for me.

You have to wait a bit for the advertisements to load and cause the
problem, the actual article doesn't do it. It does it every 2 minutes
(give or take a few seconds) for me.

2.1.95 SMP over 28.8 PPP link.

I'm convinced at this point that PPP is the culprit. Do you have any
idea what kind of hardware is at the other end of your PPP link? It
wouldn't happen to be an Ascend product?

This smells of the usual VJ compression bugs over PPP/SLIP links...
