Egcs 1.0.3 & Linux

I can't speak for egcs, but I have been using gcc-2.8.1 since it came
out. All the build problems I report here occur before code-generation.
When I have been able to build, I have not run into functional problems
that others using (probably) 2.7.2.3 have not also encountered.

I also built and ran ~= 2.1.100 with the version of pgcc shipping with
Stampede-0.79 without incident.
