Sound problems...

I have been experiencing sound-related hangs in all late 2.1 kernels.
It seems that after a certain amount of time (ranging from about an hour
if the system is unloaded aside from the program playing the sound, down
to a couple of minutes if the system is heavily loaded) of sound playing,
the system simply locks solid. (2.1.109 and above are actually an
improvement over 2.1.108 and below, under which I was lucky to get a few
seconds of output, regardless of load.) No log messages, no screen
messages.

I haven't had this problem with 2.0.34 and 2.0.35 -- they both seem stable
when playing sound, again regardless of load.

I've managed to reproduce this problem with both a PAS16 and a cheap
WSS clone card.

System:

Cyrix P233
Epox EP-5BVP3A Motherboard (VIA VP3 chipset)
a DEC Tulip based network card (by D-link, can't remember the model #)
S3 Virge based video card
PAS16 (also happens with a Zoltrix WSS-clone card)

96 MB of RAM (consisting of a 64 MB SDRAM DIMM and two 16 MB EDO SIMMs)
However, I've tried things with just the DIMM, and with just the SIMMs.
No change.

A few days ago, someone posted a patch that supposedly cured hangs with
GUS cards. I tried applying it -- again, no change.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm at a loss about how to proceed.
