With all my respect for a top kernel hacker, I think that you are
plain wrong. Multischemed algorithms are very common in many cases
(almost all sensible and sound numerical programming is multischemed)

If both algorithms are standard and well tested I see no problem
to a dynamic change of strategy between them to get the best of
both worlds...

What is good and sound for n=100 maybe is suboptimal for n=10000.
