pre-patch-2.3.49-2 doesn't boot --- pre-patch-2.3.49-1 does ???

I have the problem that pre-patch-2.3.49-2 doesn't boot on my system. The
kernel prints the line "Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel."
and then reboots. pre-patch-2.3.49-1 boots OK on the same hardware and
with the same kernel configuration (attached).

The system is an AMD 486DX-4 100MHz processor on a PCI board with a SiS
chipset.
