It would help a huge amount to show your system log messages from a
card insertion. I can't tell if this is an issue with module loading
or something else entirely.

There is no need to configure the aic7xxx driver either as a module or
linked into the kernel. The apa1480_cb driver takes what it needs at
compile time.
