But can you add some helper functions instead?  Perhaps:

static inline int xen_safe_write_ulong(unsigned long *addr,
    unsigned long val)
{
    //...
}

static inline int xen_safe_read_ulong(unsigned long *addr,
        unsigned long *val)
{
    //...
}
