'{ $(1); }' might work here, to avoid the extra subshell.

Shaves 20-30% off the runtime here in a silly
system("(true) >/dev/null 2>&1 && echo y || echo n") vs.
system("{ true; } >/dev/null 2>&1 && echo y || echo n")
comparison.
