building an SMP kernel

I've been trying to build an SMP kernel. First, trying to find gcc-2.5.8
that works is difficult. I'm building on a Slackware 3.0 system (that
comes with gcc-2.7.0). gcc-2.7.0 won't build gcc-2.5.8 on my system.
I pulled the gcc-2.5.8 binary tarball from tsx-11 but it fails to build
linux-1.3.35.

Could anyone who has successfully built SMP support into the kernel
please post a message as to *exactly* how it was done? The SMP.txt
file in Documentation is sparse on details...
