smbmount (ksmbfs-0.3) broken in pre2.0.x?

In the pre2.0.x kernels (I'm at 1.99.6 now), smbmount causes the
mounted directory to be filled with garbage characters when an 'ls' is
performed - lots of question marks, mostly. smbclient appears to work
just fine. I'm manually 'insmod smbfs' prior to performing the
smbmount. Anyone having similar problems?
