Check out the binfmt_misc patch at http://www.linuxhq.com/upatch21.html
or its original home page. It allows you to associate programs with
file magics, so when the kernel recognizes the gzip magic, it could fire
up an application that does whatever you want to happen (e.g. uncompressing
and executing a compressed program).
