Help diagnose micronics dual fortress + 2.0.33 hang

A few months back I received a demo system with:

micronics dual fortress
2 pentium II 300
2 2940UW
384MB DIMM (3 x 128MB)
3c905
and some UW SCSI drives

I ran 2.0.33 on this system and it worked great. It ran INN 1.7 with
a full feed for over a month. No problems.

We had to return the system to the local vendor, but recently we
purchased the exact configuration from the same vendor. I've had all
sorts of problems with the new system. The biggest problem is that
with an SMP enabled linux 2.0.33, a `make -j' kernel compile will
eventually cause the system to completely hang. With only one cpu it
seems to run fine, and I've tried them both individually. It also
hangs with only a single controller and video card.

Does this sound like a memory problem? (I don't have extra memory to
test with right now)

Maybe the motherboard is bad?

What else could it be?

BTW, all the BIOS settings seem ok. pnp is disabled and it is
the latest BIOS version available.

Thanks.
