kernel/hardware? hard disk weirdness...

Stumbled upon something weird here, perhaps something in the IDE driver?

The problem is _not_ present in 2.0.32, and I don't know about the kernels in between, but in 21.84 and later it's there.

Normally i just have one hard drive in the system, hda (Maxtor 86480D6 6181Mb). When I connect a slave drive, hdb (QUANTUM LP85A 980809105 85Mb :-), newer kernels freeze doing the partition check. It prints "hda: " and stops, the drive access LED shining brightly. It seems to be a hard lockup since neither Ctrl-Alt-Del nor the power button (ATX) works... The BIOS is an award version 4.5something I think (don't want to reboot now) on a i430TX m/b.

Could this be a hardware misconfiguration or kernel problem? I tried setting the jumpers on the Quantum drive weird settings thinking it might be broken, but this ('slave', that is :) is the "best" (=only working) setting.
