I think that SMP=1 should be the default because eventually
we may want SMP=1 to be the only kind of kernel so that we can have
fully preemptable kernel threads, which in turn will allow every
linux box with enough CPU to do a lot of real world tasks which
will become important in the next few years, like telephone and
video. So, flushing out bugs that occur when SMP=1 is more
important to the future. It's also one less variable to deal with
in terms of delivering maximum reliability from a given amount of
programming hours.
