probs with 95 (hate that number!)

I am running 2.1.95 SMP RedHat of an ASUS P55T2P4D main
board
(430 HX chip set).
1. I was reading my mail when the system froze.
2. I had to cycle the power button:-( When it came up, it
tried to fsck the disk, but the system hung again.
3. I did another reset and booted a non SMP 2.0.33 kernel I
keep for such emergencies. It executed fsck, but forced
me to run it manually. 4. After I made the repairs
(two pieces to /lost+found) I rebooted the
2.1.95 kernel. It hung again.
5. Back to the power switch, another fsck under 2.0.33 and
system boot.

I performed a backup to tape under 2.0.33. I rebooted
2.1.95 and tried the same backup. It hung again. I have
had these problems with and without the patch mlord posted.

It "feels" like IDE problems. I have done nothing but run
Netscape and do backups. There always seems to be an IO in
progress when it freezes. Sorry for such a vague report, but
when it locks up I get no messages etc. Both of my non SMP
systems seem to run fine.

Any suggestions?
