2.1.95 and PPP errors?

I've double checked my supporting software (which is not to say it
is absolutely up to date) and even spent the day migrating my
system up to ppp 2.3.3 ...

... but I still get about 2000 TX errors per second and dismal
throughput.

Any ideas how I can figure out what is going wrong?
