Andrew,

My Toshiba notebook fan runs almost all the time using Win95 (and yes,
it is set for power saving). In fact, when my wife uses Eudora to
just to check her mail, it will turn on half the time.

I've only had it turn on when displaying a *lot* of large image files
in a continuous slideshow (very demanding CPU usage) under Linux. The
sleep-on-idle ability of Linux, and the fact that it's a Real OS (tm)
which is efficient, makes a huge difference.
