problems with aic7xxx, 34pre 13 vs 34pre15

Dear Doug, dear Alan, dear readers!
I have a onboard AIC 7881U, which repeatedly
since 34pre15 (I haven't tested 34final yet)
does not detect the CDROM (NEC) but does detect the IBM DORS hard disk.
It always does detect the hd, and then something like 'resetting for
the second half of rettries', and then it doesn't find the CDrom
(which does NOT have a CD in.)

Everything is absolutely fine with pre13, and I can not find (at first
glance) a difference between the aic7xxx files of both versions.
(The only difference in config is Codepage 850 support and ISO8859_1
support turned on in pre15).

Help!
What information can I provide to track that strange thing down?
