APM bios support hangs kernel 2.1.107

I compiled the linux-2.1.107 kernel.
I used to include (in kernel 2.0.30) the APM character
device, with 'enable console blanking using APM' enabled.
When I do the same for kernel 2.1.107, the kernel hangs
during booting when starting the APM character device.

Anyone know what's going on there ?
