2.0.35 boot error??

I tried to move from my 2.1.108 kernel to the stable serite, 2.0.35 (am going
into hospital and wanted a leave a reliable system). When I attemp to boot the
2.0.3(4,5) kernel, I get the message-

VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem) readonly
Unable to open initial console

Then the system freezes (alt-ctrl del still works). My computer is a NEC 6050
MX laptop. I did not have this problem with my other non laptop system.

Any ideas?
