SVGALIB/X kills my modem?

I have noticed that if I start my ppp script, and then imediatly
start X or start a svgalib program my modem hangs up. But If I wait
till It's connected, and then try to startx or a svgalib program it works
fine. This doesn't seem like a huge problem, but I'd like to know why.
Here's my configuration:
1. S3 Virge DX w/ 4 megs
2. 1 nice 17 inch SVGA PnP monitor
3. Some really cheap generic_generic modem (28.8) <-- How can I check this
without opening my box, is there some thing in /proc?
4. Linux 2.0.35
