ppp with 2.1.129

I am having difficulties with ppp on 2.1.129 as well
but only when downloading between two linux 2.1.129
systems:

S--------LO--------LH

S is a solaris system and LO and LH are my office and
home systems both running 2.1.129. If I download using
ftp from LO to LH, the transfer starts normally but
slows down after 40K or so and then times out and dies.

The same transfer from S to LH (through LO) works fine.

This problem used to be there with 2.1.105, disappeared
around 2.1.120 to reappear with 2.1.129, I think.

I can't find error messages in the logs.
