compile kernel

hi
i am using rh 5.2 on a sparc station 5 when i try to upgrade th kernel i got this problem
in i386 i use make menuconfig,make dep,make zImage or bzImage,make modules and make modules_install
i try that on my sparc but when i do make zImage or bzImage it filed the error is "no target"
then i try to use make vmlinux ,it can form new kernel but it's very big (1,7 MB)
how can i compres my kernel?
