Totally offtopic, but in the 1880s a fellow invented a safety
mechanism for elevators. It prevented them from dropping suddenly to
the ground by triggering brakes automatically. He wanted a lot of
money for the licenses. All the manufacturers waiting seventeen years
and then incorporated the new idea.
