A small group of Linux kernel hackers have come together to write a new FAQ for
the kernel mailing list. The FAQ is available from
http://www.altern.org/andrebalsa/doc/lkml-faq.html (a Web server in France)
and also from a mirror site in the US:
http://www.ececs.uc.edu/~rreilova/linux/lkml-faq.html (daily mirror).
The purpose of this FAQ is twofold:
1) To improve the signal to noise ratio on the kernel list. We would like to
have in the FAQ answers to most questions that are repetitively asked on the
kernel list. The best way to fight noise is accurate, authoritative,
well-researched information.
2) The FAQ is also a good way to add pointers to information that covers
specific subjects that often appear in the kernel list. This is the case when
e.g. somebody has thoroughly studied/tested/hacked a specific issue and wants
to make the information available to other kernel list users. The usual way is
to announce a URL on the kernel list itself, but given the actual rate of
postings, an announcement is quickly forgotten. Adding a pointer in the FAQ is
a good way to have the information permanently indexed.
The FAQ right now has about 100 high quality Q/A's, and contributions are
expected and welcome.
We hope experienced Linux users and newcomers will find the FAQ equally useful
as a tool for Linux kernel hacking, and that it will help keep the Linux kernel
mailing list a good forum for kernel development discussions.
